About the Board

Baltimore County Public Library is governed by a seven-member administrative board appointed by the County Executive. The Board operates under Laws of Maryland Related to Public Libraries. The Board has the legal authority to see that the library system is well managed and operates in accordance with the laws as well as policies established by the board itself.

Trustees are appointed for a five-year term and may be reappointed for an additional five-year term. Apply for a vacancy online.

Are you interested in serving the Baltimore County community as a member of the Board of Library Trustees? While vacancies are infrequent, applications for new trustees are welcome.

Candidates for library trustee positions must be residents of Baltimore County and representative of the area the library serves. They must also have:

  • Demonstrated interest in the library
  • Readiness to devote time and effort to attending board meetings and willingness to participate in trustee activities
  • Ability to plan creatively and to carry out plans effectively
  • Ability to analyze efficiency of business procedures and to be part of the accountability process to the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team

All applications will be reviewed by the Board of Library Trustees, and those applicants having the most appropriate qualifications will be interviewed by the board. Upon completion of interviews, the name or names of those applicants considered most highly qualified will be sent to the County Executive who will make the final appointment.

Upon appointment, the member will be required to file a financial statement with the Baltimore County Ethics Commission. In the selection process, the board tries to represent the broad demographic makeup of Baltimore County.
