New Year: Discover the New You

  • January 02, 2024
  • By Baltimore County Public Library

New year, new you. It’s a common phrase that gets thrown around quickly after January 1 as people write down their New Year’s resolutions. However, most people usually give up on the goal within the year's first quarter. As your community connector, we want to help you with your resolutions, whether it’s to explore, learn, create or connect.

Ways to Stick to Your Goals

According to Cigna Healthcare, here are five tips to help you stick with those goals throughout the year:

  1. Start with small goals.
  2. Make it measurable.
  3. Be realistic.
  4. Make a plan.
  5. Stay positive.

The Library Can Help

Whether your resolution is better financial, physical or mental health, we are here to help you. Along with our special January programming, we have several other ways to help you stick to your goals.

Resolution: Learn Something New

  • Mango Languages—An online language-learning system that teaches conversation skills for over 71 different languages as well as English as a second language for speakers of 19 languages.
  • LinkedIn Learning—Unlimited training on a wide variety of topics, including business skills and software, web design and development, music and audio, photography, video editing and animation.
  • Peterson's Test and Career Prep—Online practice tests and study materials for the GED, SAT, ACT, Praxis, NCLEX, TOEFL, citizenship, postal or military exams, law enforcement, occupational tests, certification and licensing tests and more.

Resolution: Fewer Bills

Hi, we’re free here! The library is the home of saving money. But if you’re looking to cut the cord, we have a few easy places to start.

  • Internet—Chromebooks and hotspots are available through our Library of Things. Eligible families can also apply for the Affordable Connectivity Program. Find out whether you qualify.
  • Movies and shows—Stream with hoopla and Kanopy.
  • Music—Stream with hoopla.
  • Newspapers—PressReader gives you access to local papers as well as national and international favorites. We also have subscriptions to "The New York Times," "The Wall Street Journal" and "The Washington Post."

Resolution: Financial Health

  • Entrepreneur Resources—If you’re looking to start a new business in 2024, we have services to help you start.
  • Programming—We hold virtual and in-person programs focusing on financial health throughout the year. Check back to find one that fits your needs.
  • Tax Resources—We have resources to help you prepare your individual tax return.

Resolution: Eating Well and Exercise

We have a large collection of books to help you get the year started right. Click on a title to place a hold.

Have another goal? Visit one of our branches, where staff can point you in the right direction. Or, sign up for a My Librarian appointment, one-on-one personal assistance with a librarian, in person or virtually.
