Vision To Learn Returns to Library

  • May 30, 2025
  • By Baltimore County Public Library

Vision To Learn, a nonprofit with a mission to help all children see clearly, is back for a seventh year at Baltimore County Public Library branches, offering free eye exams and providing glasses, if needed, for those 18 years old and younger. The program is once again expanding, making a total of 32 stops at 18 branches between Tuesday, June 17, and Wednesday, August 20. If the initial exam shows glasses are required, further examination is provided by a licensed optometrist. The child is then able to choose from a limited selection of youth and adult frames. The order is processed, and the new glasses arrive within two to three weeks—parents are notified. The entire process, including the glasses, are free to families.

In 2024, Vision To Learn performed 384 exams and provided 244 glasses to families in Baltimore County during library stops. This is critical for our communities where families may not be able to obtain a pair of glasses on their own. A 2021 study from Johns Hopkins University showed that students who received glasses significantly improved academic success the following school year.

"As a community connector, we are committed to leveling the playing field for everyone in Baltimore County. Partnering with Vision To Learn to offer something as essential as eye exams, and potentially glasses, ensures every student starts the school year off with the ability to see and therefore succeed,” said CEO Sonia Alcántara-Antoine.

How to Register

Pre-registration is required for the visits because space is limited. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Families can register themselves for an appointment at the branch of their choice. Once registered, a parent or legal guardian must sign a consent form available at the branch either before or on the day of the appointment. Each appointment is 10 to 15 minutes, which includes an exam, glasses selection and equipment cleaning between patients.

Audiology Screenings

On select days when branches host Vision To Learn, Baltimore County’s Health Department is offering free audiology appointments for ages 3 to 17. Each appointment lasts 15 to 20 minutes and pre-registration is required. It is important to note that if you want an eye appointment and an ear screening for your child, you must register for both individually.
