Plasma and Pride: A Star-Studded Celebration
Recognized in June, Pride month is a time to honor the history, resilience and joy of the LGBTQ+ community. This year’s theme, “50 Shades of Pride,” commemorates 50 years of Baltimore Pride and the many identities, stories and voices that make up this vibrant community. At Baltimore County Public Library, we celebrate Pride to affirm that everyone is welcome at our branches this month and every month. We have special programs, book displays and a full digital library for you to explore.
Meet Plasma
“Broadway’s new baby,” Plasma, is coming to our Owings Mills Branch on Tuesday, June 3. The drag queen competed in “RuPaul’s Drag Race” during season 16 after taking New York by storm. We had an opportunity to chat with her ahead of her June program.
Q: What was your experience like on “RuPaul Drag Race”?
A: Plasma—Fabulous! I learned a lot, made new friends and somehow became the most notable Barbra Streisand impersonator in the “Drag Race” franchise. I’d say it was a successful run!
Q: What are some of your inspirations that inspire your drag style?
A: Plasma—Well, Barbra obviously, but I learned a lot from my grandmothers and the culture they shared with me. We watched old movies together and made quick, biting jokes about our extended family members at holiday gatherings, which really set me up for a career on the microphone dressed like Lucille Ball.
Q: What was it like shooting a music video?
A: Plasma—Hard! Producing/co-directing/artistically designing/starring in not one, not two, not three but FOUR music videos last year was so much work, albeit the most fun work I’ve ever done. There must be a thousand things you don’t ever think about before you make a high-production video project that feel like life-or-death decisions, so it’s definitely a labor of love. Then, you add a tugboat into the mix (as well as the speedboat from which your team is shooting) and then the chaos really ensues!
Q: We are a public library, so we have to ask, do you have a favorite book?
A: Plasma—My favorite books right now are “Speech Team” by Tim Murphy and “Patti LuPone: A Memoir.” Both exceptionally queer-coded and touching!
You can hear more about her life and career during our Owings Mills Branch event, plus take a picture during the meet and greet portion of the program. Plasma is just one of dozens of programs we have during Pride month, including Pride story times, crafts, an author panel and more.
