Library Participates in Maryland Public Libraries' Career Success Month

  • January 17, 2023
  • By Baltimore County Public Library

A new year means new goals for many in Baltimore County, and for some, this could be to get their small business off the ground or to expand what they currently have. Baltimore County Public Library wants to help you with those goals. We are partnering with Maryland Public Libraries for its Career Success Month, which begins on January 17 and runs through February 17.

Hosted by libraries throughout Maryland, Career Success Month provides library customers with guidance from experts on a wide spectrum of business to job advancement topics and helps them navigate everyday life and overcome barriers while pursuing career goals.

Programs

Baltimore County Public Library is proud to be a participant in Career Success Month and is hosting several programs along with other libraries in the state, that support jobseekers, aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners. Registration is required for each of our virtual events. Some of the highlighted programs include:

Portrait of Kathryn Finney
  • January 18, 7 p.m.—"Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights for Small Business" presented by the United States Patent and Trademark Office
  • January 19, 6:30 p.m.—Keynote speaker and entrepreneur Kathryn Finney (pictured) will discuss her book “Build the Damn Thing: How to Start a Successful Business If You Are Not a Rich White Guy”
  • January 24, 7 p.m.—"Discrimination and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Know Your Rights" presented by the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights
  • January 25, 7 p.m.—"Goal Setting for Success" with Confidence Coach Shelley Eldridge

The library also offers programs year-round that support jobseekers, small business owners and anyone looking to enhance their work skills. We offer legal clinics, programs and opportunities for entrepreneurs and one-on-one assistance (by appointment) for things like conducting a job search, creating a resume and cover letter, or developing a business plan.

  • Schedule a My Librarian Appointment—Try My Librarian and My Librarian for Small Business for in-person or virtual help with job searches, resumes and small business counseling.
  • Speak with a Lawyer for Free—Lawyers in the Library with Maryland Legal Aid offers free legal advice to eligible individuals at many of our branch locations, and our Mobile Library Law Center is staffed with lawyers as it travels around the County.
  • Learn a New Skill with LinkedIn Learning—Login for free with your library card and choose from thousands of online courses focused on technology, creative and business topics.
