Library Celebrates 75th Anniversary
Baltimore County Public Library is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year! It's hard to believe that 75 years have passed since the first Board of Trustees meeting was held on April 20, 1948. At that time, the library had only 10 branches, but today we have expanded to 19 branches and five bookmobiles, serving the diverse communities in Baltimore County. Watch our 75th anniversary celebration video.
Not only have we expanded over the past seven decades, but we’ve also transformed how libraries operate, evolving from a place primarily associated with books, to a community connector offering resources like Lawyers in the Library, Social Workers in the Library, and passport and notary services.
Literacy also looks different than it did 75 years ago. We’re living in the age of digital literacy, so the library is a place where customers can use public computers and Wi-Fi while also requesting hotspots and Chromebooks from our Library of Things. We also have a large digital library filled with audio and e-books, access to newspapers, magazines, movies, shows and music. Whether you want to learn a new skill, attend an outdoor story time or participate in a community event, the library is a go-to destination for all.
"We are thrilled to celebrate Baltimore County Public Library's diamond anniversary! This milestone is a testament to the library's enduring commitment to our community and our commitment to provide access to information, resources and opportunities that enrich lives,” said CEO Sonia Alcántara-Antoine. “We are proud to be a part of this county's history, and we look forward to continuing to serve our community for many decades to create a more inclusive and engaged Baltimore County."
Celebrate With Us
The library has planned a yearlong celebration to commemorate this milestone, filled with exciting events, programs and activities. We invite all of our customers to keep an eye on our event calendar throughout 2023 to find programs at a branch near you.
