Let the Library Help You Manage Holiday Stress
December 18, 2023 | By Baltimore County Public Library
Find the holidays are supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but for many it can also be overwhelming. Between the pressure to be merry and the expectation of picture-perfect celebrations, it's easy to feel like you're drowning in tinsel. For some, family gatherings resemble a sitcom script gone wrong, and the financial strain of gift-giving can turn ho-ho-ho into oh-no-no. According to the American Psychiatry Association, nearly a third of adults say stress is heightened in December. So, they provided seven ways to help manage stress during the season.
- Practice mindfulness and meditation.
- Preventing burnout—it’s OK to say no.
- Take a break.
- Get some fresh air and sunlight.
- Stay in therapy if you are in therapy.
- Honor those who are no longer here.
- Avoid overspending and focus on being present.

Other Library Options
The library is more than just books. We’re a place to help those in the community who need it.
- Calming/mindfulness songs—hoopla has an extensive list of calming music for all ages, including the Calm Collective.
- Grab a seat—Everyone is welcome at the library! In case you just need a place to unwind, grab a book, magazine or newspaper, scroll on your phone or browse the web and relax.
- Handmade gifts—We have a plethora of craft programs happening throughout December. Take one of those items and gift them to the aunts, uncles and grandparents in your life.
- Paws to Read—While this program is meant for shy readers, it’s also a great time for children who may be overwhelmed by the holiday to read to a dog and relax. They are named man’s best friend for a reason.
- Social Worker in the Library—Get answers to questions and find resources for a variety of topics, including financial support, food stamps, grief and loss support and mental health.
- Treat yourself—Join one of the library’s book discussion groups. You’ll meet some great people and have a ton of fun, too.
- Yoga for Beginners—Yoga is known to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. The Cockeysville Branch is hosting this program just in time for the holidays and, because it’s for beginners, it’s perfect for everyone.
