What Collection Development is Reading in December
December 03, 2018 | By Baltimore County Public Library
Booklists are a great source of recommended reads. Collection Development staff are taking advantage of PBS's "The Great American Read" list and the National Book Award longlists for two December reads.
"Ghost" by Jason Reynolds
"Ghost" was one of the titles on PBS's "The Great American Read." Life is not easy for 13-year-old Castle Crenshaw (aka Ghost) and his mom. They still carry the scars from the night that they had to run for their lives when Castle’s dad tried to shoot them. Castle’s life veers in a different direction when he stumbles upon a track team practice and ends up landing a spot on the team. Jason Reynolds captures what it’s like to be a kid with all of the peer pressure, the silliness, the misconceptions and the way some positive support can change your outlook on life. —Kristin
"American Street" by Ibi Zoboi.
Get a head start on one of the books and authors we’ll be presenting as part of this April’s BC Reads: Speak Out. Fabiola Toussaint, dreaming of a better life, leaves Haiti with her mother. Upon arrival, Fabiola’s mother is detained because she lacks the proper documents. Fabiola must continue on to Detroit where her Aunt Jo and cousins are waiting. Even though she was born in America, Fabiola grew up in Haiti and has to quickly adapt to high school life in America. Fabiola becomes caught between snitching on her aunt and cousins and her mother’s release. Zoboi’s moving, young adult debut was also longlisted for the 2017 National Book Award. —Angelique
