Be in the Know: Language Learning with Rosetta Stone and Mango
June 05, 2018 | By Baltimore County Public Library
Learn a new language! The library offers two online language learning resources free to cardholders.
Rosetta Stone has 30 languages to choose from. The lessons, which range from Spanish and French to Vietnamese and Pashto, can be taken more than one at a time.
Learn at your own pace through an immersive experience, meaning your native language isn’t used, which makes you actively participate in your own learning. Speech recognition assesses your pronunciation and gives instant feedback on how you’re doing. Rosetta Stone also comes with a built-in phrase book ideal for use in day-to-day encounters. Learning on the go is also made easier with downloadable audio lessons.
Mango boasts over 70 languages, including dialectical variants and English lessons for non-native speakers. Offerings include common languages as well as more unique ones, including Pirate!
Mango continues to grow the languages offered and is currently developing courses in American Sign Language. Focusing not only on the words to be spoken but also on cultural nuances, the lessons are self-paced and most learners finish one unit in about three months with daily study.
