It Was ‘A Fair to Remember’
The rain that fell the evening of September 26 failed to dampen the spirits of the nearly 200 people who attended the first annual "A Fair to Remember" fundraiser for the Foundation for BCPL. With a plethora of carnival games to play, an array of silent auction items to bid on, a great band, delicious food and drink, raffle baskets full of goodies – and a covered courtyard – the rain was but a backdrop to a fun and exciting evening. The evening benefited a great cause with nearly $7,500 raised to support the new Storyville at Woodlawn.

Thanks to all the sponsors and silent auction/raffle donors who made the evening possible.

The foundation hopes to see everyone at next year’s "A Fair to Remember."

Picture Books Preserve Memory of Alan Murphy

Peter Pumpernickel, an imaginary character, enlivened the stories Alan Murphy often told that delighted his children and grandchildren during the course of his 79 years. Alan’s wife Dawn shared both his penchant for storytelling and love of the Arbutus library that they visited frequently with their family. When Alan died a year ago in June, stories and libraries merged in Dawn’s mind as a meaningful way to honor Alan’s life and perpetuate his memory. Books for the library, she thought, would make an everlasting tribute. An e-mail to friends suggesting contributions to purchase children’s books in lieu of flowers resulted in checks for $3,000 flowing in from all over the U.S. and Canada. That money enabled BCPL’s Collection Development office to choose 250 different classic children’s picture books alive with the tales of favorite characters and to purchase a total of 255 copies. It was an emotional time for Dawn upon opening the cartons see how her husband’s memory would live on in the kinds of stories he loved to tell. Along with members of the Arbutus staff she began affixing the custom-designed memorial bookplates. Probably Peter Pumpernickel would have approved.
