Abraham Lincoln Essay Contest

"What Does the Life and Legacy of Abraham Lincoln Mean to You?"

Contest Rules:
• All entries must be typed and double-spaced.
• Only the themes above will be considered.
• Contestants must attend school or reside in Baltimore County and be in grades 6-12. One prize will be awarded for grades 6-8, and one prize for grades 9-12.
• Maximum Length: 300 words for grades 6-8; 600 words for grades 9-12.
• Entries submitted must be the sole work of the contestant.
• Essay entries will not be returned to the contestant.
• Essay contest begins January 21, 2010 and ends on February 19, 2010. Late entries will not be considered. Winners will be announced on February 24, 2010 and posted on the Baltimore County Public Library web site with parental consent.
• All entries must include: name, grade, school/home school, age, home telephone number, and e-mail address (if available).
• Submit entries
   o By e-mail to towson@bcpl.net. Include Abraham Lincoln Essay Contest in the subject line,
   o by U.S. mail or in person to
      Friends of the Towson Library, Essay Contest,
      Baltimore County Public Library, 320 York Road, Towson, MD 21204.
• No entry fee is required.
• Parent or guardian must accompany the winner to receive the prize.
• Winners will be asked to do a reading of their essay at the beginning of the program, Let Freedom Ring, on February 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Towson meeting room.
• Judging will be conducted by members of the Friends of the Towson Library. Relatives or members of the Friends of the Towson Library are ineligible.
• Prizes:
   o Publication in the Friends’ newsletter
   o $50.00 prize for grades 6-8 (1 prize)
   o $50.00 prize for grades 9-12 (1 prize)
   o Winners will have their entries posted at the Towson library.

Evaluation Criteria:
Entries will be judged on grammar, spelling, and adherence to contest rules.
