Summer Reading Program
– June 9 through August 2, 2008
Craft Instructions:
BUGGY HEAD BAND
- 1 strip of construction paper 24” long
- 6 strips of construction paper cut to 1 ½” x 12”
- 2 sticker eyes
- tape
- Make the 24” piece of paper into a circle that will fit
on the top of a child’s head. Use tape to secure the 2 ends of the paper
together. It is OK if the ends overlap. The main thing is that the circle is
not too big or too small for the child’s head.
- Attach 3 of black 1 ½” x 12” strips on each side of the
circle. They should hang off the circle like bug legs. You may need to
slightly crease the “legs” about and inch from the top of the circle to give
the legs a more buggy feel.
- Attach the 2 sticker eyes to the front of the circle.
PIPE CLEANER BUTTERFLY
Materials: 3 pipe cleaners (any color)
- Take one pipe cleaner to make the body. Fold in the
middle and twist to the top, leaving about an inch and a half for the
antennae.
- Take one pipe cleaner to make the top set of wings. Twist
the middle of the pipe cleaner around the “body” (close to the antennae) to
secure the wings. Curve each half of the pipe cleaner to form wings and
twist each end around the “body” to attach.
- Take the last pipe cleaner to make the bottom set of
wings. Twist the middle of the pipe cleaner around the “body” (this time,
under the spot where you attached the first set of wings). Curve each half
of the pipe cleaner to form wings and twist each end around the “body” to
secure.
- Curve the two end pieces from the body to look like antennae.
BOOKMARK
- Foam Stickers
- Pre-cut bookmarks
- Other decorating tools – construction paper, markers, etc.
- Use foam stickers to design your own bookmark.
- String yarn through the hole.
WACKY PAPER PLATE BUGS
- 2 Paper plates, 1 cut in half
- Brad
- Dot stickers of various colors (the kind used for labeling files)
- Eye Stickers
- Marking pens, crayons, colored pencils, etc.
- One paper plate will be the base of the insect. Turn plate upside down
and attach wiggly eyes to this plate, close to the edge.
- The two halves will be the wings for your imaginary bug. Turn the halves
upside down and punch a hole in one end of each of these halves, about one
inch from the edges of the plates. This is where you will attach the brad.
- Position the wings on the base plate of the bug. Run the brads through
the holes in the wings and the base. Open them flat against the back of the
base plate to secure the wings in place.
- Decorate as you wish, then flap the wings and fly away home!
