Unemployment Information:  The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, & Regulation manages unemployment insurance for Maryland residents.  Claims may be initiated and maintained via the web and biweekly payments are issued in the form of a check or a preloaded debit card.  A couple of the more important links on the site include:

Finding and keeping a job is crucial: 

BCPL can help. A powerful database called Testing and Education Reference Center  features interactive online practice tests including GED, SAT, CLEP, GRE, NCLEX, PRAXIS, EMT, Police and Firefighter Exams, U.S. Citizenship and Civil Service Exams. 

The Maryland State Library Resource Center has created the Job & Career Information Center which includes a series of tutorials for library customers to use during their job search.  The tutorials help the customer prepare for their job search, covering such tasks as applying for an email address, searching job Web sites, and applying online for a job.

Testing and Education Reference Center (local interest)
Detailed information on undergraduate and graduate programs, executive education programs, vocational and technical schools, career colleges, distance learning programs and more.  Take a career assessment and build a resume. Also features interactive online practice tests for examinations. Tests include G E D, United States citizenship, civil service, military and college entrance exams and many certification and licensing tests. Scholarship and financial aid information available. Available on public computers in Baltimore County Public libraries or from any computer, with a valid library card registered at Baltimore County Public Library.

Job Corps is a free education and training program that helps young people learn a career area, earn a high school diploma or G E D, and find and keep a good job. For income eligible youth ages 16 to 24. Two Job Corps Centers are located in Maryland.

Work Permit Process (local interest)
From the  Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR)
Teens 14 through 17 years of age need to get a work permit after they are offered a job or each time they change jobs. A validated work permit, with an Issuing Officer's signature must be in the employer's possession before the teen is permitted to work.

Both the newly hired teen and the employer must complete the online Work Permit Application Form (available as Word or PDF form). It is also available from a local high school.  A parent or guardian must sign the form. Use this form's content to complete the online Request for a Work Permit Form. Take the signed hard copy Application Form, the Application Receipt from the online Request for a Work Permit Form, and Proof of Age to an Issuing Officer, who will issue the official Maryland Minor Work Permit. Baltimore County Public School middle and high schools have Issuing Officers [P D F].

Apprenticeship and Training (local interest)

Apprenticeship is an industry-driven program which is sponsored by employers, employer associations, and jointly by management and labor. An apprentice, as an employee, receives supervised, structured, on-the-job training combined with related technical instruction in a specific occupation. Apprenticeship is open to anyone age 16 or older, however, an employer may set a higher entry age. Individuals must be age 18 to apprentice in specified hazardous occupations.

Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) (local interest)

Provides individuals with disabilities with employment assistance.
