Storyville

Storyville is an interactive early literacy learning center designed specifically for children birth to five and their caregivers.  As charming to adults as it is to children, Storyville is a place where preschoolers and their caregivers can read, play and learn together in a fun, interactive, and literacy-rich environment. Storyville can be found at the Rosedale and the Woodlawn branches.

About This Branch

The branch was dedicated by County Executive Frederick Dewberry on June 23, 1974. Designed by the architectural firm J. Prentiss Brown, Inc., the Rosedale Branch sits atop one of the highest sites in eastern Baltimore County. The Storyville wing opened on February 8, 2008.

About This Community

Rosedale was a farming community from the time of the first settlers until suburban development began after World War II. US Route 40, which runs through the community, carried George Washington to New York in 1789 where he was inaugurated as president.

The origin of the name Rosedale is not documented with certainty. However, in 1950 a fourth grade class was told to interview family and friends about the history of the Rosedale community. From that activity came an explanation:

"There was a young Englishman who had a farm on Hamilton Avenue just above Philadelphia Road which was covered with beautiful roses. Since his name was Dale and since the roses were so lovely, they felt that Rosedale would be an appropriate name."
