About This Branch

The building that houses the Reisterstown Branch dates back to the 1820's, when it was known as the Franklin Academy. In 1874 it became the first high school in Baltimore County, and in 1961 became home to the Reisterstown Branch. Renovations in 1995 included a larger parking lot and a 1,800 square foot addition.

About This Community

John Reister was born in 1715 in Germany and sailed to Philadelphia in September 1738. In 1746 he married Margaret Sohn, daughter of a local innkeeper.

On March 2, 1758, he acquired 20 acres on the Conewago Road and called it "Reister's Desire". He moved his wife and six children to this land and built an inn or tavern.

On January 1, 1763 Mr. Reister purchased 83 acres of land which adjoined his property. This purchase gave him land on both sides of the main road and became the center of Reisterstown.
