InfoCenters (local interest)

Our librarians created the Web Resources – InfoCenters – as reliable starting points for finding information on subjects that are of interest to our users. We evaluate the quality and usefulness of each of the links we select and focus on local information when it is available. The content of each InfoCenter is not intended to be comprehensive and may change as additional sources become available. Please read the Internet Acceptable Use Statement of the Baltimore County Public Library regarding information on the Internet.

African American InfoCenter
Features the latest books about the black experience, homework sites on black history and famous people, information on art and culture, health, business, black colleges, media, local museums and attractions, and more.

Arts and Entertainment InfoCenter
Find worldwide and local festivals and events, future concerts, and movies and reviews. Contains local restaurant guides, theatre and music events, and museums and galleries. Search for music lyrics and identify recorded music. Includes some seating charts for local venues.

Business and Investing InfoCenter
Covers local, national, international, and minority business. Focuses on local resources for business owners and for small business assistance. Links to our databases of full-text articles on business topics, to company directories, and stock, mutual fund, and industry investment details. Look into company annual reports and S EC filings as well as facts on saving and investing in general.

Consumer InfoCenter
Find local emergency and non-emergency hotline numbers and special transportation services. Covers frauds and scams, identity theft, local complaint resolution and help with consumer issues, computer buying/disposal, general and electronics recycling, and automobile buying, registration and licensing. Special focus on local energy conservation, suppliers and rates, green buildings and technology.

Education and Homework InfoCenter
Useful links for several homework subjects. Focuses on local public and private schools and colleges, service learning, financial aid/scholarships, G E D classes and tests, S A T test preparation, local test proctoring sites, home schooling, learning disabilities, after school programs, summer camps, tutors, and tips on choosing a preschool or elementary school.

FastFacts InfoCenter (Reference)
Quickly look up brief biographies, calendars, calculators, dictionaries, encyclopedias, telephone numbers, quotations, country or state facts, maps and atlases, postal rates, ZIP codes, copyright facts, literary criticism, correct grammar and common citation formats for research papers, the latest Maryland real estate property ownership, sales price and assessment information, and more.

Government InfoCenter
Features Baltimore County, Maryland, and national government agencies and identifies our county’s local, state, and federal government officials. Highlights elections, voting and political information, tax forms and information, census and government statistics. Covers Baltimore County community development and preservation, emergency preparedness, zoning and planning, and more.

Health InfoCenter
Covers medical conditions and diseases, drugs, alternative medicine, nutrition and fitness, and substance abuse. Compare local doctors, hospitals, home health care, and nursing homes. Find health organizations, hotlines, and support groups, medical and health news, disability resources, caregiving information, and more.

History and Genealogy InfoCenter
Includes Baltimore County, Maryland, United States, world and women’s history. Find local historical societies and historic sites and Baltimore County community histories and historic photos. Features genealogy sites, including finding birth, death and marriage certificates or other vital records.

Holidays and Events InfoCenter
Find out about local, state, national, and international holidays and festivals. Check out the local event calendars. Presents etiquette sites and suggestions for weddings, parties, birthdays, reunions, showers, and anniversaries.

Home and Garden InfoCenter
Features cooking, gardening and landscaping, and home building, improvement and repair. Provides links to apartment living, senior or elder housing, and sites on finding and financing a home with an emphasis on Baltimore area.

Internet InfoCenter
Locate local computer classes and online tutorials. Find Internet service providers and free e-mail services. Learn about Internet security and scams, instant messaging, Internet search engines and subject directories.

Jobs and Careers InfoCenter
Offers local, state, and national job search sites and resume posting sites, as well as local resources on volunteering. Explore a future career, the education or training needed, possible salary, employment trends, and more. Features resources for teens and students seeking that first job. Has tips on creating a resume and cover letter.

Korean/Russian/Spanish Language Page
Information to help speakers of these languages find library services, community services, and Web resources in their own language.

Law InfoCenter
Find local, state, and national codes, laws, and regulations and facts about our courts. Points way to legal assistance through a lawyer or other legal services. Find law libraries, legal forms and terminology, notary services, and legal research resources. Special focus on family and consumer law.

News and Weather InfoCenter
Search for the latest news by local, regional, and national magazines, newspapers, radio and television stations. Features media in other languages. Gives current time, weather and weather emergency information, traffic reports, tides, lunar and solar phases, and eclipses.

Parenting InfoCenter
Geared to parents but with resources for child care providers as well. Promotes reading and early childhood literacy and child health and safety. Addresses choosing and maintaining quality child care, involvement in a child’s education, getting children ready for school, helping with homework, and working with teachers.

Sports and Recreation InfoCenter
Focuses on local recreational, collegiate, and professional sports. Covers local and state parks and campgrounds and recreational activities, such as hobbies, antiques and collectibles, car repair, local hunting, fishing, boating and sailing, and more. Presents national sports statistics.

Travel InfoCenter
Traveling to the Baltimore area? Covers nearby destinations, lodging options, maps, transportation, activities and events, as well as travel tips for special populations, and travel help in general.

Good place to start to find out about Baltimore County and its history. Designed for both newcomers and residents of Baltimore County. Has searchable historic photographs, and directory of local organizations and service providers. Information on apartments, finding a house, elder housing, local houses of worship, local schools, neighborhood improvement or community associations, services directed to families with children, to veterans, and the homeless. Includes Infobank with its economic, population, and business information for both the business community and residents of Baltimore County.

SAILOR Internet Services
Provides dial-up access to the Internet free of charge to Maryland residents through participating Maryland public libraries via a state-wide, toll-free modem pool. Also, free Internet access and web site hosting for Maryland state or local government, and Maryland public or private schools from Kindergarten through twelfth grade.
