Books come in non-traditional formats which are particularly useful for people on the go. Digital content, including downloadable audio and eBooks require a valid BCPL library card for use. Braille Books for Children

BCPL has a small collection of Braille picture books suitable for preschool children. These can be used by a sighted child learning to read assisted by a parent who is blind or a child who is blind learning Braille. Databases

BCPL provides free access to a variety of premium online databases, including magazines, journals, newspapers, automotive and engine repair, biographies, test and exam practice tests, health, business, encyclopedias and more. Databases are very useful for research and school assignments. Databases are available at Baltimore County Public Library branches and most are available from home, work or school through the Baltimore County Public Library home page. All you need is a valid library card registered at the Baltimore County Public Library.

 

DVDs and Digital Streamed Movies

Check out current releases of for both adult and children's titles available on DVD. Please see DVD policies and fees for more information about this collection since they have lending policies that are different than those established for the book collection.  Check out new DVD releases on the library's Hot Titles pages.

 

Just launch Kanopy and watch must-see classic films, The Criterion Collection, learn about every subject imaginable from The Great Courses and PBS or indulge in festival indie or world cinema sourced from award-winning filmmakers globally. You will need a Baltimore County Public Library card and an Internet connection. Sign Up through Kanopy and follow the prompts to create a free Kanopy account. All films on Kanopy come with captions and transcripts that are fully ADA compliant.

 

The Criterion Collection of influential 20th century American independent and foreign films can be streamed to your computer or mobile device.  No checkouts are required and there is no limit on the number of times that they may be viewed.  Synchronized scrolling transcripts are available for each film.  You can also personalize an account by clicking "Sign in to create playlists / clips" in the upper-right-hand corner.  All you need is a Baltimore County Public Library card and an Internet connection.

 

Engravers

BCPL does its part to help secure the community.  The library has engravers available to be borrowed. Use these to engrave your belongings such as bikes or other valuables.  These devices can be placed on hold and checked out just like our books.  Check to see if your branch has an engraver available or to place a request for an engraver at the branch of your choice.

Baltimore County Public Library’s Baby Boosters Kits are collections of books and resources for use by parents and child  care providers.

Book Club Kits
The library has created a number of 8 copy (small) and 12 copy (large) book club kits that include multiple copies of a title and a discussion guide for the convenience of your book club.  Kits circulate for six weeks and qualify for renewal.  Book club kits are created on an ongoing basis.  Learn more about the policies regarding these kits or browse our collection.

Large Type Books

All branches have a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction large type books.  These materials are listed in the library's online catalog and can be identified by the prefix of "Large Type" as a part of the call number. Legacy Web Historical Photographs

Search or browse Legacy Web, a digital collection of images selected from a collection of photographic negatives and a smaller collection of photographic prints owned by Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL). Themes include the changing landscape and architecture of Baltimore County as depicted in images of buildings and street scenes. Learn more about the scope of this collection.

 

Local History Collections

Historical image of Reisterstown Library Arbutus, Catonsville and Reisterstown Branches have historical materials about the local communities they serve. The local community history information consists of rare and out-of-print books, newspaper clippings, and occasionally, historical prints of local sites. These materials are non-circulating and in some cases are accessible by appointment only. Please call the branch to determine whether you need an appointment to view their historical collection.

BCPL has partnered with Digital Maryland to provide online access to a selection of historical photographs, documents, and artifacts from BCPL's local history collections. These collections include Catonsville at the Turn of the 20th Century, Fair of the Iron Horse - A Digital Maryland Collaboration, and Franklin Academy: The Evolution of a school.

Baltimore County Book Cover Whether planning an excursion, delving into history, locating government information, answering school assignment questions, or just browsing for photographs, sports, and more, this collection includes abroad spectrum of material. All branches have a wide variety of materials about Maryland and Baltimore County.

All branches have current subscriptions to newspapers and a variety of magazines in print. Library and branch holdings for magazines and newspapers can be found in the library's online catalog.

 

BCPL also provides free access to a variety of online databases of magazines, journals and newspapers. They are available at Baltimore County Public Library branches and most are available from home, work or school through the Baltimore County Public Library home page. All you need is a valid library card registered at the Baltimore County Public Library.

 

The library offers downloadable digital magazines through RBdigital. Find more information on how to download and read free magazines on your computer or personal device.  A BCPL library card is needed.

 

Sign Language Instruction

Sign Language Image Books and DVDs are available for an adult or child to learn American Sign Language.

Video Games

All our branches have videogames. The customer service desk can help you locate and check them out. Customers may borrow up to three games, at no charge, for 21 days. Extended Loan (overdue) fee is $1 per item, per day. More information about borrowing games…
 

Check Hot Titles for the newest games. To find the titles BCPL owns for your game station, you can use the buttons below. To have a video game sent to your branch, select a title and select the "Place Request" button. You will be notified when the game is at your branch and is ready to check out.

World Language Collections

 

The library has a small collection of titles in three non-English languages.  Titles can be sent to any of our branches, just make a request (place a hold) at any Baltimore County Public Library branch either in-person or by phone or by placing the request online using the BCPL catalog. The library's online catalog is available with a Korean, Russian, or Spanish search interface.
