Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The virus is transmitted primarily by blood and semen. If you suspect exposure, it is important that you be tested promptly.

The Baltimore County Health Department operate anonymous, free, walk-in counseling and testing sites throughout the county. People who attend the clinic are given information about HIV and may choose to be tested for the virus. Because of the time needed to process the test, people who are tested must return to the clinic for results.

People infected with HIV may contact the Health Department for referrals and assistance in their health care case management at 410-887-AIDS (410-887-2437). General information about HIV/AIDS is answered on the AIDS information line Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. at 410-887-AIDS.
