Maryland law requires that young people remain in school until they are sixteen years old. If you are out of school and wish to get your General Education Diploma or GED high school equivalency, continue your education at one of the Evening or Saturday High Schools or other alternative diploma programs.

Provides diagnosis, evaluation, and follow-up of children enrolled in public
and private schools who are experiencing
behavior or learning problems that interfere with academic progress. Services
are available to Baltimore County residents with preference given to those

Alternative High School serving west side students needing to
improve social behaviors in order to succeed in regular comprehensive
programs. The center offers academic, vocational and social and emotional
experiences designed to help ages fourteen to twenty-one acquire
attitude, skills and behaviors necessary to succeed in the work world.
Services include basic skills and General Education Diploma or GED instruction, vocational exploration, academic
and vocational assessment, job search and social and emotional
support for disconnected out-of-school youth.

Free family literacy program for parents of children ages birth to ten
years. Parents must be eligible for Academic Skills Enhancement or ASE,
General Education Diploma or GED or English for Speakers of Other
Languages or ESOL programs.
During the parent's adult
education time, the children participate in an early childhood education
program. The program includes parenting education, parent and child
interaction time, home visits, family nights and field trips. Even Start has centers throughout Baltimore County.

Evening and Saturday High Schools

For adults and high school students who wish to take or accelerate their
ninth through twelfth grade courses. Program gives students expelled
from day school an opportunity to modify unacceptable behavior, develop
good study skills, and demonstrate a sincere willingness to return to
the day school. Also, open to adults age sixteen and over who are no longer
in day school.

condition which interferes with learning. Services to the child may

services. Information on Individual Education Plan or IEP is available. Assists with placement of
students outside the home school. This includes county cluster programs
and non public placements. Most special education matters can and should
be addressed first at the child's school with his or her teachers, IEP
team chair, and or principal.

A voluntary program to help at risk
youth that are ages sixteen to eighteen, high school dropouts, and unemployed, to achieve
a high school diploma through a holistic military style, twenty-two-week residential

A federal agency which promotes community service to address a wide range of
social problems. The Maryland Delaware State office manages the following
volunteer programs: RSVP or Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, FGP or
Foster Grandparent Program; SCP or Senior Companion Program; AmeriCorps*VISTA
or Volunteer in Service to America. AmeriCorps members, seventeen and older, serve in their community. For a term of
service with AmeriCorps, members can earn an education award that can be
used to pay for college tuition or to pay back student loans.

The State has financial aid programs in the form of grants, scholarships and
other awards for students who want to further their education beyond high
school. Aid programs may be merit-based and or need-based. Each year, you
must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. By filing a FAFSA, you will be considered for State of Maryland
financial aid. Check with all the colleges you are considering applying to
for their financial aid requirements and deadlines. They may have
supplemental forms you need to complete.
