Maryland law requires that young people remain in school until they are sixteen years old. If you are out of school and wish to get your General Education Diploma or GED high school equivalency, continue your education at one of the Evening or Saturday High Schools or other alternative diploma programs.

Provides diagnosis, evaluation, and follow-up of children enrolled in public and private schools who are experiencing behavior or learning problems that interfere with academic progress. Services are available to Baltimore County residents with preference given to those who are uninsured. Referral to this program should be made through the school nurse or family physician.

Local support group for adults and children with ADHD or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. The group meets monthly and there is a membership fee.

Web site shows a wide range of classes for adults, youth and seniors. Some are held online or in locations around Baltimore County. Classes cover training for business or career, computer applications, and personal interests such as cooking, foreign languages, sign language instruction, money management, crafts and hobbies, physical fitness, home repair, running small business, travel studies, and more.

Maryland School for the Blind

Provides diagnostic and prescriptive assessments of visually impaired children through referrals from the child's local education agency. Lists of nonpublic schools that hold a Certificate of Approval from the Maryland State Department of Education for enrolling students in Nursery School, ages three and four, Kindergarten, and or Grades one through twelve and nonpublic schools providing special education. Also, lists church-exempt schools registered with the Maryland State Department of Education and nonpublic entities that supervise home instruction of Maryland students. Information is available on getting an official high school transcript from a nonpublic school that is no longer operating.

Literacy Instruction

Free family literacy program for parents of children ages birth to ten years. Parents must be eligible for Academic Skills Enhancement or ASE, General Education Diploma or GED or English for Speakers of Other Languages or ESOL programs. During the parent's adult education time, the children participate in an early childhood education program. The program includes parenting education, parent and child interaction time, home visits, family nights and field trips. Even Start has centers throughout Baltimore County. Alternative means of earning a high school diploma for adults eighteen or older. This is a self-paced program with no required classes. Graduation from the program is assessed through take-home projects, interviews and oral and written exams.

First Step, Inc.
Offers a youth employment and training program for youth ages sixteen to eighteen who are out of school or dropouts and unemployed. Provides aid in pre-employment training, job retention skills, Adult Basic Education and General Education Diploma or GED preparation courses.

    College Financial Assistance

    A federal agency which promotes community service to address a wide range of social problems. The Maryland Delaware State office manages the following volunteer programs: RSVP or Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, FGP or Foster Grandparent Program; SCP or Senior Companion Program; AmeriCorps*VISTA or Volunteer in Service to America. AmeriCorps members, seventeen and older, serve in their community. For a term of service with AmeriCorps, members can earn an education award that can be used to pay for college tuition or to pay back student loans.

    The State has financial aid programs in the form of grants, scholarships and other awards for students who want to further their education beyond high school. Aid programs may be merit-based and or need-based. Each year, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. By filing a FAFSA, you will be considered for State of Maryland financial aid. Check with all the colleges you are considering applying to for their financial aid requirements and deadlines. They may have supplemental forms you need to complete.
