Attention Mac and iPod users:

One drawback to OverDrive is its inability to work with Mac computers and iPods. OverDrive uses the .wma format, for Windows Media Player. Apple uses the .aac format for iPods and other Macintosh products. All devices play the MP3 format, but they do not all have the security that the publishers and vendors require. They make it too easy to copy, burn and share. There is not currently a library product that works with iPods.

Book Awards

Black-Eyed Susan Book Award This image indicates local interest.
Honors outstanding books, chosen annually by Maryland students. The purpose of this award is to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature.
Find current 2008 Nominees2007 award winners and past award winners.

Coretta Scott King Award
Recipients are authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the American Dream.

Edgar Awards
The Edgar Allan Poe awards, also know as "The Edgars", are awarded to authors of distinguished works in various categories the mystery genre.

Hugo Awards
Lists current and past Hugo Award winners and nominees for science fiction and fantasy titles.

International Literary Prizes and Awards
Current and past lists of various awards for adult's and children's books from all over the world.

Maryland Blue Crab Young Reader Awards (local interest)

National Book Awards

Nebula Award

Foreign Language Collections (local interest)

  • Korean - Cockeysville and Towson have fiction and non-fiction books for adults and children.
     
  • Russian - Russian materials for adults and children can be found at Pikesville, Randallstown and Reisterstown. A small collection of entertainment or feature length, two-day DVDs in Russian for adults are available at Pikesville and Reisterstown.
     
  • Spanish - Children's books, mainly picture books, in Spanish and bi-lingual Spanish and English can be found at all branches. Catonsville, Essex, North Point and Towson have collections of fiction and non-fiction for adults and older children. A small collection of adult and children's entertainment DVDs in Spanish are available at the Essex branch.
     
  • If you need any assistance please stop by at the Information Desk and the librarians will be happy to assist you.
     
  • Books, tapes and CDs for learning foreign languages are available at all branches and can be found in the non-fiction section of the library.

    This non-profit organization takes donations and distributes them free to those who want to read.

    ProLiteracy
    A non-profit, nongovernmental, worldwide literacy organization.

    BCPL does accept donations of gently used hardback and paperback fiction and non-fiction, and children's books, however, not all branches accept donations at all times.
