Arbutus Branch History

The current Arbutus building is 25,000 square feet and replaces the previous location at 1581 Sulphur Spring Road. The library opened on August 10, 2010 and is one just part of the $11 million library, community and senior center complex at this location.

The branch offers a full range of information services, including telephone and walk-in reference service. Our collection includes everything from best sellers and children's literature to DVDs and books on CD. Business reference and local history resources are also available.

In addition to large book and AV collections for adults, teens, and kids, this branch offers the following:

Local History  & Arbutus Room

A collection of local history can be found in the Arbutus Room.  The Arbutus Branch houses collections of cataloged files of newspaper clippings, pamphlets, local history documents, maps and photographs pertaining to the history of Arbutus, Halethorpe, Relay, St. Denis, Lansdowne, Baltimore Highlands, Riverview and English Consul. The collection is maintained by the Friends of the Arbutus Library and is housed in the library History Room. Access to the collection is available through the Information Desk. The library's maintains a history of the Arbutus area and our Legacy Web photo collection includes:

Arbutus Stories

During the 2010 spring semester and again in 2011, Intercultural Video Production students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County worked with residents of Arbutus and surrounding communities on a collaborative video project.  In Arbutus Stories, residents reflect on their life-long association with the community through digital stories. Each resident teamed with a student to create short movies combining photos and other imagery with recollections of people and places. The project was conceived as a celebration of the August 2010 opening of the new Arbutus Branch. You can watch all of the Arbutus Stories on BCPL's YouTube channel.
